What Fluoride Is And Its Role In Dental Health
At Roots on Whyte Dental, we recognize that although the use of fluoride brings local benefits in strengthening teeth and fighting off tooth decay, it may at the same time entail some negative overall health effects. Often, when fluoride is used to bring benefits in oral health, it is also absorbed systemically into the rest of the body. When bodily absorption of fluoride occurs at high levels, some may experience health complications among which are dental fluorosis, thyroid deficiency, increased incidence of bone fractures, depression and behavioral problems etc. The level of fluoride contained in dental products and materials is regarded to be safe for the general population. However, dental products are not the sole source of fluoride and one can intake additional fluoride from other sources such as fluoridated Edmonton’s city water supply, foods and beverages made using the same water supply, some medications, black tea and more. At the same time, we understand that certain individuals may be more prone to the effects of fluoride. Because of these concerns, our office offers fluoride-free alternatives to all our patients.
